Financial Firm Singapore Office
Located near the Singapore shipping port, one of the largest in the world, the treatment of colored wood slats is inspired by the many colorful shipping containers that can be seen from the office windows.

The Port, Translated into Wood
The Singapore office of this financial firm sits near one of the largest shipping ports in the world. The containers are visible from the office windows, stacked and sorted in blocks of saturated color, and Kuchar took the palette directly from them. Colored wood slats carry that reference through the interior: the port's color, rendered in a material and at a scale that belongs indoors. It is a single move, drawn from the one view this building could not have anywhere else. An office in Singapore had no reason to look like an office in Chicago, and this one does not.

Kuchar works from Chicago and designs offices abroad, which demands a specific discipline: the brief travels, the references do not. Office design companies that treat an international commission as a Chicago project shipped overseas tend to produce interiors that could be anywhere. The alternative is to find what is actually outside the window. A financial floor in Singapore, a century-old building on the Chicago River, an office in Amsterdam — the sector repeats and the client type repeats, but the material answer should not. Local specificity is what keeps a global portfolio from flattening into a house style.
