A Dining Room Animated by a Constellation of Pendants
Firefly Kitchen was a restaurant project in Evanston, Illinois, just north of Chicago along the lake. Kuchar took its design cue from the name itself, conceiving the dining room around a constellation of suspended pendant lights arranged to suggest the movement of fireflies through a summer evening. The lighting did the heavy lifting: scattered, irregular, glowing at varied heights, the fixtures animated the ceiling plane and gave the room a sense of motion even when guests were seated. The rest of the palette stayed quiet on purpose, letting the pendants carry the atmosphere while the food and the guests took the foreground. The result was a dining room with one bold gesture and the discipline to let it speak.
Restaurant design in Evanston operates in a particular context — a walkable North Shore downtown anchored by Northwestern University, an established local dining scene, and patrons who travel between independent restaurants and Chicago's broader culinary calendar.
