Our concept began with a study of the neighborhood, the dynamic Fulton Market. The space is surrounded by floor to ceiling windows, so one is surrounded by natural light, downtown views, urban living, and the constant movement of the former industrial district. A sophisticated, neutral palette creates a clean backdrop for gentle nods to the neighborhood’s existing industrial character such as exposed concrete, metal, knurled handles, and brick laid subway tile. The aesthetic is truly a celebration of the floor.
The goal was to create a well-functioning space for Tarkett’s employees while offering a welcoming environment for industry partners. We wanted to ensure there was a comfortable place for guests to meet and work throughout the day while offering a change of posture and atmosphere.

A Tarkett Showroom Designed to Celebrate the Floor
Tarkett's Chicago showroom occupies a 10,000-square-foot floor plate in Fulton Market, the former meatpacking district that has become one of the city's defining commercial design corridors. A global commercial flooring manufacturer, Tarkett asked Kuchar to combine its existing showroom with an active office environment — one space that could host industry partners and the in-house team in equal measure. Kuchar built the design around what the architecture already offered, orienting product displays and gathering zones to take advantage of nearly 360-degree floor-to-ceiling windows and the downtown views beyond them. Exposed concrete, brick subway tile, mixed metals, knurled hardware, and textured glass reference the neighborhood's industrial heritage, while a sophisticated neutral palette recedes so the product — the floor itself — sets the tone.
Commercial showroom design in Chicago is its own discipline. A working showroom has to function as multiple things in one space: as a sales floor, a hospitality space, a sampling library, and an office, often at the same time. The architecture has to let each mode coexist without competing for attention. Showroom interior design for a manufacturer calls for a sophisticated neutral envelope — one that steps back the moment a product line is brought forward and reasserts itself as guests move between vignettes. Fulton Market, with its industrial bones and generous floor plates, gives showroom design a natural starting point: exposed structure, abundant daylight, and a sense of place that grounds even the most polished interior in the city's manufacturing past.
