Long Grove Residence

This five bed, six bath home was designed ground-up and customized for the home owner’s unique design taste. They wanted a modern home that was neutral in palette but had elements that were designed specific to them. Many of the textures, accents and lighting were directly inspired by their homeland, Poland.

A Custom-Built Long Grove Home Where Modern Architecture Meets Personal Heritage

This five-bedroom, six-bathroom residence sits in Long Grove, Illinois — a Lake County village whose strict zoning and low-density character preserve a rural, wooded suburban quiet uncommon this close to Chicago. Kuchar designed the home from the ground up, calibrating every interior decision to the way the family actually lives. The architecture follows a modern register, anchored by a neutral palette and clean material vocabulary that lets the surrounding landscape lead the view. Personal layers are introduced through textures, accents, and lighting drawn from the homeowner's cultural heritage, giving the otherwise restrained interior a quiet, specific identity. The home reads as a contemporary residence built around a family — not a generic modern shell — and one that belongs to its owners in a way only a custom build can.

Custom modern home design in the Chicago suburbs is one of the region's most disciplined residential forms, particularly in villages like Long Grove where building ordinances and large-lot zoning encourage homes to sit lightly on the land. A successful ground-up modern home in this kind of setting depends on a clean architectural framework, a restrained palette that lets the surrounding woodlands read as the loudest material in the room, and a willingness to layer in personal references — the textures, finishes, and lighting that turn an architectural shell into a particular family's home. The result, when calibrated correctly, is a residence that reads as both fully contemporary and fully personal, built to belong to its owners over decades rather than to perform for a single design moment.
