Lakeview Residence

Inspired by the homeowner’s love of the ocean, this minimal Lakeview East residence features a cool palette of blues and greens and mirrored finishes.  In the master bath, we hand selected a marble that mimics waves crashing on the shore.  The master bedroom features an ombre wallcovering that moves from blue to green and is the first thing the owners see when they wake up.  These cool colors are accented by bright yellows in accent seating.

A Palette Borrowed from the Water

The Lakeview East residence takes its palette from water. The homeowner's attachment to the ocean and the lake set the direction, and Kuchar built the interior around cool blues and greens, mirrored finishes, and a restraint that keeps the rooms minimal. In the primary bath, the marble was hand-selected for a figure that reads like waves breaking on shore. The bedroom carries a Calico Wallpaper gradient that shifts through blue into green, the first thing the owners see each morning. Bright yellow accent seating interrupts the cool range at intervals, placed where the eye needs somewhere to land. The client was not afraid of color, and the house is better for it.

Lakeview East runs along Chicago's North Side lakefront, bounded by Lake Shore Drive and reaching west toward Broadway and Racine, with Belmont Harbor and its marina at its edge. More than forty percent of the neighborhood dates to the 1889 building boom, and rehabilitated vintage courtyard buildings sit on the side streets between the Drive and Broadway while vintage and modern high-rises face the water. Custom home interior design in a setting like this begins with the light and the client rather than a catalog, drawing a palette out of what the owner already loves. A cool range can read cold in the wrong hands; paired with warm metal, mirrored surfaces, and one unapologetic accent, it reads serene.
